Brief on United Nations International Day of Older Persons #UNIDOP2024

The International Day of Older Persons is an occasion to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society and to spread awareness about the importance of senior citizens in our society and appreciate their contributions as well as the issues and challenges of ageing in today’s world.”

Resolution 45/106, passed by the United Nations General Assembly on 14th December 1990, voted to establish October 1st as the International Day of Older People.

This year’s 1st October United Nations International Day of the Older Persons (UNIDOP) celebration is themed “Ageing with dignity: the importance of strengthening care and support system of older persons worldwide.”  and marks the 34th commemoration.

Currently, Ghana’s elderly population (aged 60 and above) has increased significantly, reaching nearly 2 million individuals as of 2021. This number is projected to rise to approximately 2.5 million by 2025 and 6.3 million by 2050.

This significant growth emphasizes the necessity for enhanced support systems to safeguard the health and well-being of older persons in Ghana.  The Ghana Health Service as part of its efforts has established the Healthy Ageing Programme in the Family Health Division.   Currently a service protocol guideline with support from the World Health Organization has been developed for service providers which will be launched for implementation.

In collaboration with the Centre For Ageing Studies (CFAS) University of Ghana, this year let’s all reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the rights, health  and well-being and dignity of all older persons so they can age with security and dignity.
