Quality is embedded in every facet of health service delivery. Reviewing quality of Clinical Care is a reliable way of measuring improvements. The Ghana Health service has since the early 2000s held annual clinical care conferences dubbed “QA Conference” which brought together key regional staff with responsibility for quality to interact and discuss the support system for clinical service quality, identify input, process, output, and outcome gaps, and agree on better and feasible ways of addressing the gaps. The process however stalled for a number of reasons including financing.
With the enactment by the WHO, in 2019, of Resolution WHA72.6 – “Global action on patient safety” that mandated member states to implement the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030, Patient Safety conferences took centre stage from 2019 to 2023 as the Service commemorated the Day on September 17th each year. As critical as the day is, the Service will continue to celebrate this Day in ways other than conferences, beginning this year.
Beginning this year, the Institutional Care Division will hold a Clinical Care Quality Conference which will encompass Safety and all other dimensions of quality such as Patient-Centredness, Equity, Efficiency, Effectiveness, Access, Timeliness, Integration and Integrity. This way, the health system will keep an eye on all aspects of clinical care to produce favourable service delivery outcomes.
The objectives of the conference are to:
- Engage stakeholders on the imperative of clinical care quality and safety, and harness efforts to make it a culture
- Raise national awareness on the drivers and enablers of clinical care quality and safety, and the positive effects of self-leadership and accountability on sustaining quality of care
- Advocate for a re-orientation of mindsets that align with the culture of quality improvement for clinical care
The theme for this year’s Conference is “Strengthening Clinical Care through Evidence-based Practice for Quality Service Delivery”.
The conference sub – themes stated below will seek to explore factors for improving quality of clinical care:
- Improving diagnostics for Patient Safety
- Sustaining IPC/WASH for quality clinical care
- Improving data use for quality clinical care
- Quality & Safety for improved clinical care outcomes, across the health system building blocks
