Mental Health Department

The mandate of the department is to coordinate, supervise monitor, and develop both facility and community based mental health services to improve accessibility, availability and integrate mental health services into primary healthcare by implementing national mental health policies.

Functions of the department include:

• Providing technical support and participation in the development of strategic plans, policies, guidelines, protocols and standards for mental health services
• Implementing national mental health policies, guidelines, protocols and standards
• Developing and participating in the development of training programs for various cadres of health professionals
• Collaborating with other mental health and related institutions, agencies and organizations to ensure quality mental health service delivery.

Functional Responsibilities 

The Mental Health Department will seek to develop mental health services within the Ghana Health Service. It shall coordinate, supervise, monitor and develop both facility and community based mental health service. A key part of the department’s function will be the assessment of training and equipment needs consistent with national and international standards
