Profile- Regional Health Director Upper East

Dr. Samuel Kwabena Boakye-Boateng is a Public Health Physician Specialist and a Member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a Member of Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants, Ghana (2004)

He has worked through the ladder of GHS. He worked as houseman at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital; Medical Officer at Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, Takoradi from 1999 to 2003; Medical Officer at Axim Government Hospital where he became the Medical Superintendent from 2003 to 2007. He has also worked as District Director of Health Service in Kwabre-East (2008-2014) and Atwima Nwabiagya District (Jan – March, 2015) in Ashanti Region.

From Ashanti Region, he was reassigned to the Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Division, GHS Headquarters in March, 2015 where he worked as a Public Health Physician Specialist till June, 2018. He was appointed Deputy Director in-charge of Clinical Information and Monitoring at the Institutional Care Division, GHS in June, 2018 and worked in that capacity till December, 2019 when he got elevated to the position of a Director in the Ghana Health Service with responsibility for Ahafo Region.

He was the Secretary and Chairman of the Western Regional Ghana Medical Association from 1999 to 2005 as well as a National GMA Council Member from 2003 to 2007. He also held the position of President of the Western and Central Regional Area Council of the Chartered Institute of Administration and Management Consultants – Ghana from 2003 to 2007. He has been a Member of the Joint Learning Network on Efficiency Collaborative and also a Certified Project Management Professional since 2017.

In recognition of his hard work and dedication to duty, he has earned a number of awards, notable among them are Ghana Medical Association National Commendation Award in 2013 and the Conferment of Honorary Chieftaincy Title by the Lower Axim Traditional Council for Meritorious Service during his tenure as Medical Superintendent of Axim Government Hospital.

He holds MBChB; Master of Public Health Degree from Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) Amsterdam; and a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Management Planning and Policy, University of Leeds, UK.

Dr. Samuel Kwabena Boakye-Boateng has attended several local and international workshops and conferences to enhance his knowledge and capacity. Notable among them are conferences attended in New Delhi-India (2019), Tokyo-Japan (2019), Kigali-Rwanda (2018), Nairobi-Kenya (2018), Surabaya-Indonesia (2017) and Dakar-Senegal (2016).

He has a number of scientific publications and presentations to his credit. By virtue of his knowledge and experience, he was a member of a number of National Teams / Committees that drafted policy documents, carried out policy reviews, performance evaluations and general facilitation of capacity building workshops at various levels – District, Regional, National and International levels.
