The Upper East is located in the north-eastern corner of the Republic of Ghana. It shares borders with Republic of Burkina Faso to the north, the Republic of Togo to the east, the North East Region to the south, and the Upper West Region to the west. The region occupies a land mass of 8,842 square kilometers (2.7% the total landmass of Ghana). The land is relatively flat with a few hills to the East and Southeast. Most of the eastern and western parts of the region lie within the basins of the River Volta and its tributaries. The region lies within the Sahel belt, stretching from Senegal in the West to Ethiopia in the East) of Africa does making it prone to periodic outbreaks of cerebrospinal meningitis.
The region has 15 administrative districts and 101 sub-districts. The projected population of the region for 2021 is 1,318,523
The health facilities in the region include the Regional Health Directorate, Regional Hospital, District Hospitals, Municipal and District Health Directorates, Health Centres, Clinics, Maternity Homes, CHPS, Health Research Centres and health training institutions.
