Division Background
The Public Health Division is one of the key Divisions in GHS. The Division leads and ensures development and implementation of policies and strategic plans and programmes that protect, promote and improve public health and contribute to the overall health and socio-economic status of families and communities. It plays a pivotal role in safeguarding and improving the health of the general population through disease surveillance, prevention, and control measures.
Core Functions
Providing leadership and coordinating public health activities within GHS.
Formulating public health policies within the framework of approved national health policies.
Designing and managing health surveillance, disease prevention and control, occupational and environmental health and other relevant public health programmes;
Developing and disseminating public health strategic plans, protocols, standards and guidelines.
Providing technical support in health surveillance, investigations and containment of disease outbreaks, epidemics and risks to health.
Ensuring inter-sectoral partnerships to improve health and reduce inequalities
Monitoring and evaluating public health interventions and programmes
Accelerating the scaling up of essential public health interventions: ITN/IPT-P. DOTS, PMTCT/CT/ARVT, EPI, public education on prevention of risks factors of NCDs, MDAs using CDTI, IDSR etc
Provision of technical support for the Regional Public Health Reference Laboratories
Development of early warning systems and the management of epidemics

Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe
Director, Public Health Division
Biography
Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe is a Medical Practitioner and a Public Health Physician with specialization in Applied Epidemiology and Disease Control. He is a Fellow of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has over 20 years' experience as a public health practitioner with competencies in surveillance, field investigations, research, data management, scientific communication, and teaching. He has worked at the international, national, regional, and district levels.

Disease Surveillance Department
The Disease Surveillance Department (DSD), was established to coordinate implementation of integrated disease surveillance and epidemic response activities in the country as part of efforts to strengthen disease surveillance in the country. The Department is therefore responsible for keeping surveillance on priority diseases, providing response to epidemics and disease outbreaks and rumours and initiating the process and technical support for public health intervention measures for reducing the burden of other priority diseases.
Key Responsibilities
- Strengthen epidemiological surveillance on priority diseases
- Ensure early detection of epidemic-prone diseases
- Develop early warning systems for disease outbreaks
- Monitor and evaluate surveillance activities
- Coordinate outbreak investigations and response
- Improve the accuracy, completeness, and timely submission of surveillance data
- Enhance surveillance data analysis and utilization at all levels
- Strengthen the capacity of sub-districts, districts, and regions to respond rapidly and efficiently to surveillance reports
- Improve preparedness and technical capacity of health teams to predict, detect, investigate, and respond to disease outbreaks
- Build the capacity of communities to report selected priority diseases and unusual health events, and equip sub-district and district staff to respond promptly to community reports within their catchment areas

Dep. Director, Disease Surveillance
Disease Control and Prevention Department
The Department coordinates the development of policies, strategies, guidelines, protocols and standards on disease control.
Key Responsibilities
- Provision of technical support to regions/ districts on disease control
- Developing systems for monitoring and evaluation disease control programmes in the Service
- Development of training programs for disease control staff
- Contribute to the training of disease control staff
- Provision of technical support for preparation and submission of grant proposals on disease control and surveillance to health partners and related agencies
- Contribute to the implementation quality assurance disease control and surveillance programs
- Provision of technical support to regions and districts to implement disease control activities.
