The global incidence of oral and head and neck cancers (OHNC) is rising, and Ghana is no exception. These cancers include hypopharyngeal, laryngeal, nasopharyngeal, nose and paranasal sinuses, oral and oropharyngeal, salivary glands, thyroid and other cancers from skin, muscle, bone and vessels in the head and neck area. There has been a notable rise in oropharyngeal cancers among young Ghanaians. This is largely driven by HPV and associated lifestyle changes, including high alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, and oral sex. The hidden anatomy of the head and neck area, coupled with the general lack of awareness of OHNC, underscores the urgent need for public education and early identification of OHNC for effective management.
The Ghana Health Service in 2023 and 2024 celebrated OHNC day through posters on social media and CPD accredited webinars. In 2025 there was a national celebration by GHS and lunching of the OHNC day. This year, 2026 there will be a national celebration and a CPD accredited Webinar targeting all health professionals. All, ENT, Dental and Maxillofacial health workers across various health facilities in the country will celebrate this program through education and health screening. Facilities are to conduct their celebrations between April 16th to 22nd 2026 with public education and OHNC screening. A NATIONAL WEBINAR ON OHNC Will BE HELD ON THE 22ND OF APRIL 2026.
Expected Outcome: Through the webinar, facility and community education and screenings, social media, radio and TV presentations, it is expected that there will be an increase in awareness of OHNC amongst other cadres of the healthcare workers and the general population.
Impact: Capacity building of healthcare workers and early detection and management for Oral Head and Neck Cancers.
