Ghana Reviews 2019 National Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Management

In a renewed effort to curb the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), particularly Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs), the leading cause of death in Ghana, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, in collaboration with GIZ, under the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative has held a Stakeholder Review and Validation Workshop to finalize the revised 2019 National Guidelines for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Participants at the workshop included representatives from health agencies, civil society, NGOs, patient groups, and religious leaders who offered valuable insights to ensure the revised guidelines are inclusive and practical.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, on behalf of the Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, Deputy Minister of Health, reaffirmed government’s commitment to early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, and continuous care in managing NCDs.

She spotlighted the recently launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares Initiative), describing it as a transformative step toward strengthening Ghana’s health system to better respond to NCDs.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative and its funding partners, which are supporting the Ministry and the GHS to boost capacity in CVD and Type 2 Diabetes prevention, diagnosis, and management.

The revised guidelines will ensure a comprehensive, people-centered and actionable roadmap to improving cardiovascular health in Ghana.
