The Ghana Health Service, through its Public Health Division and in collaboration with development partners, is hosting the National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS) Development Workshop in Accra from 13th–15th January 2026. The workshop represents a critical step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national systems to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies through a coordinated, multisectoral, and sustainable approach.
On behalf of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe officially welcomed stakeholders to the workshop, noting that it builds on Ghana’s successful Joint External Evaluation (JEE). The JEE assessed the country’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats, including infectious disease outbreaks, chemical incidents, and radiation emergencies.
He emphasized that Since the 2017 JEE, Ghana has made notable progress, including strengthened surveillance systems, improved rapid response teams, enhanced One Health coordination, regular simulation exercises, and the establishment of subnational Emergency Operations Centres.
In her remarks, Dr. Fiona Braka, the WHO Representative emphasized that health security remains a national priority and described the workshop as a renewed commitment to strengthening Ghana’s preparedness and response to public health emergencies through sustained, multisectoral collaboration.
