The Director-General of the Service has reaffirmed Ghana’s progress in the fight against Lymphatic Filariasis(LF) during the launch of a Technical Working Group for the disease under the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Programme in Accra.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Director of the Public Health Division, Dr. Franklin Aseidu-Bekoe, the Director-General highlighted Ghana’s remarkable achievement in interrupting transmission in all previously endemic districts as of 2025. He cautioned, however, that the fight is not yet over, noting that a few endemic districts remain under treatment. He also emphasized the urgent need to strengthen care for individuals already affected through improved morbidity management and disability prevention.
He called for sustained collaboration and commitment, stressing that while Ghana is close to elimination, no patient must be left behind.
The Programme Manager of the NTDs Programme, Dr. Joseph Opare Larbi, also underscored the country’s progress, revealing that transmission has been interrupted in 114 districts. He noted that efforts must now focus on the remaining three districts, as well as on supporting those living with the disease. He reaffirmed that LF is both preventable and eliminable.
He further explained that the establishment of the Technical Working Group will enhance coordination, strengthen partnerships, and accelerate Ghana’s journey toward eliminating lymphatic filariasis.
The Chairperson of the TWG pledged the group’s full commitment to working diligently with all stakeholders to achieve the complete elimination of the disease in Ghana.
The Technical Working Group comprises representatives from key institutions, including the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Health, the Department of Social Welfare, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the Mental Health Authority, the World Health Organization, Sightsavers, and World Vision, among others.
