The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has visited the Port Health Unit at Kotoka International Airport to assess the country's preparedness to prevent the importation of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This is one of such series of visits he has been embarking on since the outbreak of ebola in Congo.

The visit focused on evaluating screening procedures for arriving passengers and assessing measures in place to minimise the risk of Ebola cases entering the country through international travel.

As part of the assessment, Dr. Akoriyea visited the Port Health screening booth, where thermal scanners have been repaired to facilitate the screening of passengers' body temperatures. The screening process also includes assessing travellers' histories to help identify potential risks and support the early detection of suspected cases.

During the visit, the Director-General interacted with port health officers on duty and urged them to remain vigilant, professional and tactful in carrying out their responsibilities.

He emphasised the critical role of port health officers in safeguarding public health by strengthening surveillance at points of entry and ensuring the timely identification and reporting of suspected Ebola cases.

The visit is part of an ongoing Ebola preparedness and monitoring efforts by the Ghana Health Service to strengthen the country's readiness to detect and respond promptly to potential threats, while minimising the risk of disease transmission across its borders.

The Ghana Health Service remains committed to strengthening surveillance and preparedness measures to protect the health and safety of the population.
