Dr. Braimah Baba Abubakari, the Regional Director of Health Service for the Upper East Region of Ghana, hails from Zangbalun in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region. His academic journey reflects a commitment to excellence, having earned a BSc in Human Biology (2003) and MB.ChB (2006) from the University for Development Studies (UDS). He further obtained an MHPE from Maastricht/Suez Canal Universities in 2010, an MGCP from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2014, and an MPH from UDS in 2021. His professional development includes a HAM (CERT) from the Ghana Institute for Management and Public Administration in 2021 and participation in the WHO PLHTA Cohort V at WHO/Ashesi University in 2024.

In leadership, Dr. Abubakari has held several key positions within the Ghana Health Service (GHS). Since September 2023, he has served as Regional Director of Health Service for the North East Region, after acting as Regional Director for the Northern Region from August 2022 to September 2023. His leadership journey includes roles such as Deputy Director of Clinical Care for the Northern Region, Acting Medical Superintendent at both Gushegu Municipal Hospital and Tamale West Hospital, and Head of the Dialysis Unit at Tamale Teaching Hospital. Notably, he led the medical team for the 2015 Ghana Hajj Mission and served as Divisional Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association, Northern Division, for over a decade.

His work experience spans academia, clinical care, and international collaborations. He has served as a Senior Lecturer at the UDS School of Medicine since March 2022, following over a decade as a lecturer. Clinically, he has been a foundation physician for the renal and dialysis unit at Tamale Teaching Hospital, a physician specialist, and later a senior specialist in internal medicine. His expertise extended internationally as a visiting doctor in nephrology at Ospedale Santa Chiara, Trento, Italy. He has also contributed significantly to national health policy and quality improvement through roles on the Medical and Dental Council’s Housemanship Training Quality Assessment Team, various technical committees, and consultancy for organizations such as Catholic Relief Services.

Beyond his administrative and clinical duties, Dr. Abubakari serves on multiple boards and committees, reflecting his influence in both health and community development. He is a member of the advisory board of the Muslim Council, Northern Region, and sits on the Tamale Technical University Hospital Board, the Ambariya Islamic College of Education board, and several national technical health committees. His prior service includes editorial work for the Ghana Medical Association’s Focus Magazine, membership on ethics and organ transplant development committees, and contributions to maternal and child health initiatives through the CCFC PROMISE Project. His diverse engagements demonstrate a career dedicated to advancing healthcare delivery, medical education, and community well-being in Ghana and beyond.
