Ahafo Regional Profile
The Ahafo Region was created on 13th February 2019 by the Constitutional Instrument 114. The region was carved out of the south-eastern part of the then Brong Ahafo Region. It covers an area of 5,193 square kilometers and shares boundaries with the north and west by the Bono region, the east by Ashanti Region, the south by the Western North Region. The region lies in the forest zone and is a major cocoa and timber producing area. Two main drainage systems could be distinguished in the Region namely, the Bia and Tano rivers. The Tano River runs through all the six districts in the region. These two rivers serve as a source of water supply to the region and the Bono regions.
The region has a projected population of 588633 with a growth rate 2.1% from the 2021 population and housing census. Below is a table showing sub districts, districts capitals and population breakdown by districts.
Agriculture and related work is the major occupation in the Region. It is the main occupation for about two-thirds of the economically active group in most districts in the Region. Significant proportions of the economically active persons are also engage in Production. The region is also rich in Gold deposit. This is attested by Gold mining activities in three districts namely Asutifi north, Asutifi south and Tano north districts. Transport operators, labourers, Sales workers, professional and related workers are also prominent in the region. Goaso is the largest market centre in the region.
The Region is part of the forest belt of Ghana and has a vegetation consists predominantly of fertile soil, grassland, especially savanna with clusters of drought-resistant trees such as baobabs or acacias. Between December and April is the dry season. The wet season is between July and November with an average annual rainfall of 750 to 1050 mm (30 to 40 inches). The highest temperatures are reached at the end of the dry season, the lowest in December and January. However, the hot Harmattan wind from the Sahara blows frequently between December and the beginning of February. The temperatures can vary between 14 °C (59 °F) at night and 40 °C (104 °F) during the day.
Administratively, the region has 3 municipals and 3 districts with Goaso as the regional capital. The region is headed by the regional minister. However, the regional health directorate is located in Hwidiem likewise other departments also spread in other districts. The region is also ruled by traditional authorities. There are many paramount chiefs in the region and other smaller chiefs in all the communities. These traditional authorities are the bodies around which communities are organized for health delivery activities including durbars, immunization, and health education and among others.
The region has a total of 117 health facilities comprising 13 Hospitals (6 government, 2 CHAG, 1 Islamic and 4 private hospitals), 22 Health Centres (21 government and 1 private), 17 Clinics( 4 government, 5 CHAG and 8 private), 3 private Maternity Homes and 62 CHPS compounds.
Our Mandate
The Regional Health Directorate (RHD) represents the administrative apex of health services delivery within the region. The mandate is to provide and prudently manage comprehensive and accessible health services with special emphasis on primary health care at regional, district and sub-district levels in accordance with approved national policies. The RHD also works with headquarters, health partners, and other stakeholders to increase access to health services, through the provision of health infrastructure, human resources, logistics/health commodities, public health and clinical care interventions
Key Responsibilities
Generally, the region implements and monitors health Sector policies, ensures effective coordination of activities, judicious management of health resources (human, logistics, equipment and infrastructure) and provides guidance and technical support to the lower levels. More specifically the region engages in the following:
Ensuring access to health services at the district, sub-district and community levels by providing health services or contracting out service provision to other recognized health care providers in the region.
Undertaking effective management and administration of the health resources within the region
Promoting healthy lifestyles and good health habits among the public through effective and targeted health education
Developing appropriate strategies and setting technical guidelines to achieve national policy goals/objectives
Implementing and monitoring health policies, strategic plans, protocols, standards and guidelines set up by national in the region
Planning and delivery of clinical interventions
Planning and management of public health programmes in the region
Establishing effective mechanism for disease surveillance, prevention and control in the region
Strengthening public health action to reduce impact of emergencies and disasters on health in the region
Supportive supervision, monitoring and evaluation of programme implementation
Human resource management (including staff welfare)
Transport, equipment and estates management
Data collection, analysis, reporting and feedback
Collaboration with key stakeholders in health (NGOs, Community leaders, Decentralized departments, CBOs, etc.)
