Central Regional Profile
The Central Region occupies an area of 9,826 square kilometres, which is about 6.6 % of the total land area of Ghana.It is one of the sixteen administrative Regions in Ghana.It is bounded to the south by the Gulf of Guinea and on the west by the Western Region and the Western North Region.The region shares borders on the east with the Greater Accra Region, on the north with the Ashanti Region and on the north-east with the Eastern region.The region has 22 administrative districts with the historical city of Cape Coast as the capital.About 63 % of the region is rural (2008, DHS).
The region is predominantly Akan of which majority are Fantes. The 2020 estimated population is 2, 605, 490 with a regional growth rate of 3.1% and a population density of about 215 inhabitants per square kilometre.Population less than 5 years and WomeninFertility Age(WIFA) are 521,098 and 625, 318 respectively.
The region enjoys two main rainy seasons in a year and the vegetation is divided into dry coastal savannah stretching about 15 km inland, and a tropical rain forest covering areas in the hinterland.There is one forest reserve, the Kakum National Park which is a major tourist site nationally and internationally and is located about 25km from Cape Coast.The Region is endowed with rich cultural events including annual festivals such as the Aboakyer, the Fetu Afahye, and the Bakatue festivals among others.An international festival, the Pan African Historical Theatre Festival (PANAFEST) is hosted every two years by the region.It also has historic monuments like castles and forts which attract a lot of tourists both locally and internationally.
The region is considered as a citadel of education due to the number of top-class educational institutions located in the region.There are 92 senior high schools, two public universities(with one having a teaching hospital), one technical university, and three colleges of education.Adult literacy rate in the region is more than 50 % and the proportion of males who are literate is 81.4 % compared to 62.0 % of females (GDHS, 2008).
With reference to economic activities, the predominant industry in the region is agriculture(52.3 %), with manufacturing forming 10.5%.Agriculture(including fishing) is therefore the main occupation and employs more than two thirds of the work force in the region.
The region has a total of 618 health facilities, out of which CHPS facilities constitute 414, Health Centers and Clinics are 132, maternity homes are 25, hospitals and polyclinics are 45, one(1) Regional Hospital and one(1) Teaching hospital. The districts are headed by District Directors of Health Services and the Hospitals are headed by Medical Superintendents
Our Mandate
The mandate is to provide and prudently manage comprehensive and accessible health service with special emphasis on primary health care at regional, district and sub- district levels in accordance with approved national policies.The RHD also works with headquarters, its partners, and other stakeholders to increase access to health services, through the provision of health infrastructure, human resources, logistics / health commodities, public health and clinical care interventions.
Key Responsibilities
Generally, the region implements and monitors health Sector policies, ensures effective coordination of activities, judicious management of health resources (human, logistics, equipment and infrastructure) and provides guidance and technical support to the lower levels. More specifically the region engages in the following:
Ensuring access to health services at the district, sub-district and community levels by providing health services or contracting out service provision to other recognized health care providers in the region.
Undertaking effective management and administration of the health resources within the region
Promoting healthy lifestyles and good health habits among the public through effective and targeted health education
Developing appropriate strategies and setting technical guidelines to achieve national policy goals/objectives
Implementing and monitoring health policies, strategic plans, protocols, standards and guidelines set up by national in the region
Planning and delivery of clinical interventions
Planning and management of public health programmes in the region
Establishing effective mechanism for disease surveillance, prevention and control in the region
Strengthening public health action to reduce impact of emergencies and disasters on health in the region
Supportive supervision, monitoring and evaluation of programme implementation
Human resource management (including staff welfare)
Transport, equipment and estates management
Data collection, analysis, reporting and feedback
Collaboration with key stakeholders in health (NGOs, Community leaders, Decentralized departments, CBOs, etc.)
