GHS LAUNCHES STRATEGIC PHEOC DOCUMENTS AND NATIONAL ROADMAP TO STRENGTHEN EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
The Ghana Health Service has launched a suite of strategic documents and a national roadmap to guide the establishment, governance and phased operationalization of Public Health Emergency Operations Centres (PHEOCs) across the country, in a move aimed at strengthening Ghana’s capacity to prepare for, coordinate and respond to public health emergencies. The launch, held at the Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa Conference Centre of the new GHS Headquarters in Pantang, brought together stakeholders from the health and non-health sectors to advance a well-coordinated and effective national public health emergency management system.

The Ghana Health Service has intensified efforts to strengthen legal support and preventive mechanisms within the health sector as part of measures to address the increasing incidence and impact of medicolegal cases on healthcare delivery in Ghana. This was highlighted at the opening of the Structured Legal Education Programme for Legal Officers in Health, organised to enhance the knowledge, skills and capacity of Legal Officers to effectively manage legal risks and provide timely legal guidance to health managers and healthcare providers.

GHANA PUTS ITS PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEM TO THE TEST IN COORDEX I
The Ghana Health Service through the National Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC) yesterday held COORDEX I, the National Public Health Emergency Coordination and Operational Response Functional Exercise (Simulation), bringing together government institutions, health sector agencies, One Health partners, emergency management bodies, security services, NADMO, academia, and development partners to test the country's ability to coordinate and respond to a public health emergency. In all, there were representations from about 30 institutions (health and non-health sectors).

The Ghana Health Service, through the National Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC), in collaboration with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), WHO Ghana and other partners have opened a workshop to validate and finalize two key national documents guiding the country's public health emergency response: the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre Standard Operating Procedures (PHEOC SOPs) and the National Public Health Workforce Surge Standard Operating Procedures (WS-SOPs).

FUNCTIONAL SIMULATION EXERCISE AT ACCRA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO TEST MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE TO EBOLA AND PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCIES
A functional simulation exercise at the Accra International Airport brought together agencies operating at the country’s main airport to demonstrate their roles and assess the effectiveness of systems for detecting, reporting, and responding to Ebola Disease and other public health emergencies. Conducted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) with support from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), the exercise involved participating institutions working through a simulated public health event in real time to test coordination mechanisms, communication channels, emergency procedures, and response arrangements. The activity formed part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public health emergency preparedness, enhance event-based surveillance, and improve implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005) at points of entry.
